Musicians. Although working in the same field of interest can be as different as snowflakes falling to the Earth. For as many piano players as I know, they all have a style, a flavor, and a personality that fits their style of the music they play. I used to say to myself “Hey, I want to play like that guy” and be quite frustrated when I couldn’t mimick what they were doing note for note. Then one day after playing at church a person came up to me and said “Can you teach me how to play like you play?” Then it hit me that although I could teach the fundamentals of music, it would be a literal impossibility for me to teach that person to play exactly like I play. Music education, musical experiences, and musical abilities vary from musician to musician, but the good part is that there is room for all. While you should always be in a constant state of learning, building, and improving your musical skillset, just know that it’s OK to be you. What’s your musical flavor? What’s your musical personality? Who are you as a musician? Once you find out and get comfortable with it, your specific musical market will be out there waiting just for you. Variety is the spice of life so just know that it’s OK to be yourself.
